Depression treatment – help overcoming depression

Feeling Depressed Depression TreatmentDepressive feelings and major depressive episodes can challenge us in many ways. Feeling unhappy, down or sad in response to life circumstances, loss, medical conditions or frustration is quite normal. Occasionally people use the word depression to label these feelings, but, more likely, this would be classed as situational depression, where we are naturally and emotionally reacting to the circumstances and events around us.

Major depression, however, overpowers our normal emotions and engulfs our life, laying a cold wet blanket over our senses. The depressed person who experience this mood disorder find their ability to feel excitement diminish and find it hard to work, eat, sleep and have fun, the future can seem dull, hard to change and you probably feel that you can’t be bothered anyway.

But you should read on because I can help you re-engage with your feelings, your emotions and begin to take back control of your life.

Treatments for depression & lifting depressive feelings

Antidepressant medication can offer help by lifting the depressive feelings and lessening the depression anxiety so you don’t go into despair and it may help manage  the symptoms of depression such as poor sleep and appetite fluctuations.

However, I feel we need to look at the bigger picture. Medication is treating the biological side of the depression and no amount of medication will change circumstances or your confidence that you have the inner resources to change them. Realistically, if you are not changing your circumstances, your emotional responses and your vision for the future, then the likelihood of falling back into a depressive state is raised, with or without depression medication.

Commonly, when people are feeling depressed their levels of confidence are substantially lowered and beliefs about themselves can become quite negative and distorted. Beliefs about their worth, skills, looks, abilities, like-ability, relationships etc. are all lowered, thus compounding the effects of the mental disorder and making any depression treatment seem futile.

Other factors can add to this toxic cocktail of negative emotions, being overweight, stress, work worries, anger, inactive lifestyle, money, housing, family – the list goes on and they all may contribute to this major depressive disorder.

Hopefully, you can begin to see that depression is very real, however, the reality is, that it is usually made up of many differing parts, all unique to each person. The good news is that in the majority of instances it is treatable, yet many fail to ask for help and others may not even realise that they are depressed – they just think that is who / what they are.

Hypnotherapy for depression – treating depression

Mental health professionals and the NHS can’t seem to offer the depressed person enough time to help them work through the many factors in depression treatment.  So, this is where I can help you. Using hypnotherapy techniques, cognitive therapy and powerful NLP routines I can help you to manage and change your own internal environment, your emotions, moods, feelings and beliefs – of what you can’t do and what you can do. Increasing your confidence and allowing you to begin addressing your circumstances, gently building a future vision that is achievable and inspiring to move towards.

Many people move away from what they don’t want (out of the frying pan into the fire) – rather than moving towards what they do want. I can help you re-motivate yourself and bring back the confidence that is rightfully yours which really is a big help for easing depressive feelings.

We are not born with all the skills needed to navigate through life, and for people prone to these disorders, these are especially important skills to learn – give me a call, and in confidence, we can talk about what is possible, because rather than wondering why life is not how you want it to be, ask yourself, “have I made the absolute decision to do something about it, however hard that may seem?” The depression treatment and psychological treatment I use ensure you begin to think this way.

Symptoms of depression & depressive feelings

Clinical depression, depression and anxiety has become some of the world’s most debilitating human conditions and is on the increase affecting roughly 42% of women and 11% of men at various times during their lives. It is thought that women are more likely to have depressive episodes partly due to hormonal changes brought on by puberty, menstruation, menopause and pregnancy.

Men are less likely to seek help for depression, so it often goes undiagnosed, although they exhibit the same typical symptoms as women, it may also be accompanied by angry and aggressive behaviour or abuse of alcohol and drugs. Suicide can be a serious risk for men experiencing depression and figures show they are four times more likely than women to take their own life.

If you identify with these symptoms of depression, and they just won’t go away, you may want to get some help.

  • Problems sleeping or sleeping too much
  • Poor concentration and easy tasks becoming more difficult
  • Feeling hopeless and worthless
  • Obsessed with your negative thoughts and hard to be positive
  • Lost appetite or over eating
  • Loss of interest in previous hobbies or being with people
  • Decreased energy levels
  • Annoyed or irritated by even small things – and this is new for you
  • Crying or feeling overwhelmed for no reason
  • Thoughts that life is not worth living (Seek help immediately if this is the case)

There’s a vast difference between “feeling depressed” and suffering from clinical depression. The despondency is unrelenting and overwhelming. Some people describe it as “living in a black hole” or having a feeling of impending doom. They feel they can’t escape their unhappiness and despair.

However, some people with depression don’t feel sad at all. Instead, they feel lifeless and empty. In this apathetic state, they are unable to experience pleasure, even when participating in activities they used to enjoy, they feel as if they’re just going through the motions.

These signs and symptoms vary from person to person, and they may wax and wane in severity over time, in any case, why not talk to me about how we can change the way you feel and find the right way forward for you?

Important: If you are experiencing 5 or more of these symptoms and have done so for over 2 weeks, seek medical depression help immediately. Serious depression and manic-depression seem to have genetic, hormonal, and/or chemical aspects that are activated by stress and upsetting life events and thoughts. Thus, when the depression is this serious, you always need to be evaluated by your GP, who will decide if you need medication, in addition to other therapies.

Causes of depression

Depression can affect anyone at anytime; it has no single cause and often results from a combination of things. You may, or you may not know why it has affected you, either way, it’s not just a state of mind or an attitude, it can be influenced by an imbalance of a chemical in your brain and the circumstances that you find yourself faced with on a day to day basis. Regardless of the cause, depression is almost always treatable, even if you don’t know why you may be feeling that way.

There are some common factors involved in fuelling down episodes too. Genetics do play a role and depression has been recorded running in families for generations, people who have a negative outlook on life and have low self-esteem are at a higher risk , though, often this is a more generalised low level and is called dysthymia, stress and trauma at certain times of your life, such as, births, deaths, marriages, break-ups, starting a new job or losing your job may also contribute.

Finally, physical and medical conditions that leave you feeling weak or immobile can bring on depression which makes the whole situation worse as they weaken the immune system. Occasionally it can be brought on as a side effect from other medication and other symptoms, such as, eating disorders, anxiety and substance abuse.

Interestingly, people born before 1945 have 10 times less depression than those born after, indicating that your circumstances, stress, families, work and environmental issues may contribute more than the chemical imbalance.
