Frequently Asked Questions About My Calmness Course - John Glanvill - Therapist | Anxiety & OCD Specialist

FAQ about my anxiety treatment program

Here are some frequently asked questions about my online anxiety and OCD education program and recovery course.

Why is it so affordable?

I know what anxiety and depression feel like, and I know how expensive good help can be. A lot of people cannot afford the number of sessions it takes to make real progress. I wanted a thorough resource that was actually within reach for people who are prepared to do the work themselves.

I also dislike the usual internet sales model: upsells, cross-sells, countdown discounts and the rest of it. I wanted a clean arrangement. One price. Access to everything for as long as you remain a member. Leave when you want, or stay and help keep the fee low for the next person.

Anxiety is treatable when the information is sound, and the person is willing to use it. That is the point of the price.

I was a self-conscious, anxious child. OCD arrived in my early teens, and bipolar depression in my late teens. I fought those conditions until a nervous breakdown at 35 made it clear that coping was no longer enough.

Thirty years ago there was far less help available, and no internet to search. I had to go out and test things on myself. I also had to question how much doctors and medication could do on their own, and look for approaches that actually changed the way I lived.

When I had found enough relief, I retrained as a therapist and spent two decades working with people who had complex anxiety. The work sharpened what lived experience had already taught me.

The course is a structured process made up of videos, guided meditations, short essays and workbooks. It teaches you how anxiety, OCD and depression actually work, how to stop feeding the old habits, and how to build self-worth and practical life skills.

It also helps you clarify who you want to become and what you want to do with your life—then gives you tools to move in that direction.

You subscribe monthly and get access to more than 60 videos, most between 30 minutes and an hour, plus suggested reading and guided meditations.

There is no fixed finish date. You can move through it quickly or slowly. Stay as long as the work is useful, unsubscribe whenever you want, and come back later if you need another stretch.

Working through the course is itself a form of ERP. You stay with the material, tolerate the discomfort it brings up, and keep going instead of sliding back into avoidance, distraction or endless research.

What you get from it depends less on how long you stay and more on how honestly you use it. The process works in proportion to the desire and effort you bring.

Once you are subscribed, you can ask questions under each video, and I will answer them. You can also read answers I have already given to other members.

If the question is personal, use the private messaging function inside the course.

I encourage you to ask. For many people, staying silent is part of the old pattern. Learning to request what you need, rather than guessing or coping alone, is part of the work.

Yes, very. The course is hosted on Patreon. They handle all payments through PayPal and standard card processing. I do not see or store your payment details.

I have found their security to be excellent and have never had a problem with it. Access to the videos, workbooks and messaging stays inside the members’ area.

You can exit anytime.

If you are not satisfied in the first month, I will refund that month’s payment.

I cannot promise that the course will resolve every difficulty you have. I can say this: if you use it properly, you will not stay the same person. You will be better equipped to meet life with more calmness, honesty and skill.

More than 5,000 people have gone through the course. The testimonials page is a straightforward account of what they found.

I can also guarantee the work behind it. It took me twenty years to learn this and five years to build the course. I could not have put more into it than I have.

You should not choose me first. Look at the options available to you. I am one of them.

Anxiety often creates self-doubt, including doubt about whether any process can help. I would rather you test this than take my word for it. The first two videos are free, and every video in the course has a two-minute preview. That is deliberate. I want you to see the work before you commit.

I am a researcher by temperament. I test things on myself before I teach them, and I work hard to explain complex ideas in plain language. I am also straightforward and decent to deal with.

I care about reducing anxiety in the world, not about building a complicated sales machine around it.

Once you try it, you will know whether it is right for you. The aim is not to persuade you. It is to help you trust your own experience of the process.

It is called an anxiety recovery course, but the real subject is how the brain and body work. You learn practical ways to become calmer, build self-worth and self-respect, see yourself more clearly, and deal with other people more cleanly.

People who are not currently anxious or depressed often get a great deal from it. They tend to enrol, stay with the material, and put it into practice.

That points to something difficult about anxiety, OCD and depression: the condition itself can reduce the very effort recovery requires. Friends and family sometimes work harder with the material than the person who is struggling. The course is still built for both.

This is one of the hardest positions to be in. I made a short video about what I would do if I were supporting an intelligent adult with complex anxiety or OCD who would not help themselves, or who kept sabotaging the help being offered.

The blunt version is this. Anxiety and OCD are self-treatable, but only if the person becomes willing to try new things, accept change, and follow a structured process — including ERP toward the life they would be living if fear were not in charge. Recovery does not come from remaining the same person minus the symptoms. It comes from becoming someone who thinks and acts with more courage, honesty and responsibility.

You cannot do that work for them. You can stop making it easier for them to stay exactly as they are.

Practical options include:
– Trading your time and support for their learning: watch a video together before the usual reassurance or extra help.
– Doing the course yourself, so you can see what they could be practising and become a calmer, stronger example.
– Getting honest about the relationship. If they refuse all change, you may be choosing to remain the carer. That is a decision, not a life sentence you never noticed.

The first videos are free, and there are short clips on YouTube, so they can see the tone before anyone pays. The course itself is a low monthly fee and costs less than a single therapy session if you stay for a year.

The course was designed for adults. It can also work for young people of about twelve or thirteen and above, especially if a parent or carer watches with them.

If your child is younger and struggling, take the course yourself first. Learn the techniques, then pass on what is useful in language they can understand.

A number of adults who completed the work later used the same common-sense skills with their own children from a young age. Much of what I teach is practical living, not a complicated theory.

You can. At sign-up there is a gifting option. You choose an annual subscription or a set number of months, and all you need is the other person’s email address.

It is a generous gift, especially if you are close to someone who is stuck and willing to try. It works even better if you take the course as well. Then you can compare notes, keep each other honest, and support the work instead of only talking about the problem.

The gifted access is for them. If you want to follow the process yourself, you will need your own subscription. That way both of you have the material, and neither of you is locked out of the videos the other is referring to.

No. The course is for people who recognise themselves in anxiety, OCD, overthinking, self-consciousness or low mood. A label can be useful; it is not required. The work is about how you think, feel and live, not about collecting the right name for it.

No. It is a self-help process. Keep any medical care you already have. If you are in crisis, contact a doctor or emergency service. The course sits alongside professional help; it does not replace it.

ERP works. That is not a slogan. It is the part of this field that has the strongest evidence behind it.

If you tried it and nothing changed, one of three things was usually true: you were taught a thin or muddled version, you applied it incorrectly, or part of you quietly sabotaged the process — often without noticing. Skipping the hard exposures, seeking reassurance afterwards, doing the ritual in your head instead of with your hands, or using ERP only on the “big” fears while running Negative ERP all day are all common ways it fails.

This course includes ordinary ERP, but it also uses a process I developed called **iStory ERP**. That is the missing piece for a lot of people. You do not only face the feared situation. You change the internal story that makes the old response feel necessary, and you repeat that new story until the unconscious stops treating the urge as law.

The five-part Video 50 series gives more than six hours of tuition on this: how people accidentally practise ERP backwards, how daily thoughts become exposures, and how to aim the work at the life you want rather than at the latest scary theme. Used properly, that combination is a genuine change of system, not another technique to add to the pile.

If you are willing to do it as taught — including the uncomfortable repetition — it can be a game changer. If you want a version of ERP that never feels awkward, this will not be it.

Yes. Many people do. Do not change prescribed medication because of something you read or watch here. Talk to your doctor about that. The course is about how you live, think and train your responses.

No. There is a deeper thread in the work — meaning, energy, and how you meet life — but it is taught in plain, practical language. When I talk about the Soul, I mean the observer: the rider of the horse, the part of you that can watch the thoughts and feelings without having to obey them. For some people, that word also points to something larger, and that is fine. You can take it as far as it is useful.

You do not need a faith. You do need honesty and a willingness to test ideas in real life.

The videos are spoken in clear English, at a steady pace. If you can follow a normal conversation, you can follow the course. Pause and rewind whenever you need to.

If you need extra help, there are separate translation and transcription apps you can use on your own device. They are not part of the course, but many people find them useful.

The main support is under the videos and through private messaging. You can read other members’ questions and my replies. It is not a noisy social forum, on purpose.

I have found that many public anxiety forums keep people stuck. Well-meaning members who have not recovered yet often advise others from inside the same fear. That can feel comforting, but it usually offers reassurance rather than a useful way forward.

The course support is there so you can ask, get a clear reply, and keep moving.

Length of time does not decide the outcome. What decides it is whether you will stop feeding the old system and practise new responses. Long-standing habits take repetition. They are still habits. Much is possible.
